Tsomgo Lake
About This Place
Tsomgo Lake is a very popular tourist destination in Sikkim. Considered holy by the locals, Tsomgo Lake has pristine water and is also called as Changu lake. Come winters and the lake is frozen. No words can describe the beauty of this lake. Indian Postal Service released a commemorative stamp on the lake on 6 November 2006.At an altitude of above twelve thousands feet, this is a must visit place in Sikkim for nature admirers.
The Tsomgo Lake is frozen for most of the year and the ice of the lake only melts in the summer month of May and remains so till September after which it freezes again. It is believed that Lamas living here in ancient times predicted the future by looking in the waters of the lake.
The Lake during the months of May to August is surrounded by a variety of flowers in bloom such as the rhododendrons, various species of primulas, blue and yellow poppies, irises etc. It is also an ideal habitat for the Red Panda and various species of birds. Also if one is lucky enough, one can see the rainbow sprout swimming in the Lake.
