The Chopta Chandrashila Trek with Deoria Taal in winter is an unforgettable journey into the heart of Uttarakhand’s pristine Himalayan landscape. Known as the “Mini Switzerland of India,” Chopta transforms into a magical winter wonderland from December through February, blanketed in fresh snow. This trek is ideal for both beginners and seasoned trekkers, offering stunning views, challenging yet rewarding trails, and the chance to explore some of India’s most beautiful high-altitude lakes and peaks.

Highlights

  • Snow-Covered Forests and Meadows: Trekking through dense, snow-laden rhododendrons and oak forests creates a fairytale-like experience. The untouched white landscapes and quiet ambiance amplify the sense of wilderness.

  • Chopta – Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand: This winter base offers panoramic Himalayan views, with Chopta’s meadows covered in a thick blanket of snow. It’s a perfect place to take in the beauty and tranquility of a winter landscape.

  • Tungnath Temple – The World’s Highest Shiva Temple: Situated at 12,073 feet, Tungnath Temple is a spiritual and architectural marvel. The temple is closed in winter, but the sight of it nestled amidst the snow creates a mystical and sacred atmosphere.

  • Chandrashila Summit - Panoramic Himalayan Views: Reaching the Chandrashila summit at 13,000 feet is the trek’s pinnacle, offering 360-degree views of Himalayan giants like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Dome, and Chaukhamba. Sunrise from this point is breathtaking, with golden light illuminating the snowy peaks.

  • Challenging but Rewarding Winter Trek: This trek is perfect for those looking to experience the adventure of snow trekking without extensive technical expertise. Winter adds a touch of thrill with icy trails and steep ascents.

  • Camping in Subzero Conditions: Camping at Chopta in winter is an adventure in itself, providing a raw and authentic Himalayan experience with clear, starlit nights and serene silence.

  • Less Crowded Trails: Winter brings fewer visitors to this trek, allowing for solitude and a deep connection with nature amidst snow-covered landscapes.

  • Deoria Taal's Icy Reflections: The serene Deoria Taal offers a picturesque setting with partially frozen waters mirroring snow-capped peaks, especially Chaukhamba. It’s an enchanting spot for photography and a peaceful place to camp under the stars.

Who should attend?

  • Adventure Seekers: Those who enjoy trekking in snow and challenging themselves with icy trails will love this winter trek.
