About the site: Visited by Xuanzang in 7th century A.D., the Buddhist monastery at Kanheri was a well known Buddhist monastery and learning centre in ancient India. The site has more than 100 ancient Buddhist caves and is situated in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, Mumbai. Kanheri is the only rock cut cave site in India which shows occupation for around 1500 years from 1st century B.C. till 15th century A.D. Apart from a study of different features of Buddhist architecture, the site also shows evolution of Buddhism in Western India, thanks to the various sculptures carved here. The main chaityagriha proves a link between the site and the Central Asian trade route. Kanheri has the earliest sculptural depiction of Buddha in the rock cut caves in Maharashtra dating back to end of 2nd century A. D. It also houses the internationally known and the earliest depiction of the 11 headed Avalokiteshwara whose cult became popular in China. Along with this, Kanheri shows a unique rain water harvesting system and water management system used by monks 1800 years ago.
