All About It

Kedarnath is a holy Hindu town located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand in India. Kedarnath is situated at an astonishing height of 3584 meters above sea level near the head of Mandakini River. The Kedarnath temple lies amidst the majestic snow-capped Garhwal Himalayan ranges. There is a famous Hindu Mythology related to the origin of Kedarnath Temple, which states that after the Mahabharata war, The Pandavas went on an anonymous journey to beg mercy from Lord Shiva, After failing multiple times, Bhima was able to find Lord Shiva, who had incarnated as bull to hide from the Pandavas. Bhima tried to catch it and hit its mace. The injured bull was then immersed in the earth and its body parts appeared in different places. it is believed that the hind part of the bull appeared at Kedarnath, from which a "Jyotirlinga" or Light flickered and Lord Shiva appeared in his Divine Avtar.

Frequest Questions

1. Is it safe to travel to Spiti in winter?

Yes, it’s safe to travel to Spiti in winter, but you must be well-prepared. The region experiences heavy snowfall, extreme cold, and isolated roads, so it’s crucial to travel with a reliable vehicle, experienced drivers, and ensure all accommodations are equipped for winter conditions. Always keep an extra day or two in your itinerary in case of road closures due to snow.

2. How cold does it get in Spiti during winter?

Winter temperatures in Spiti can drop to as low as -20°C to -30°C, especially at night. Daytime temperatures can hover around -5°C to -10°C. Proper winter clothing and layering are essential to cope with the cold.

3. How do I get to Spiti in winter?

During winter, the only accessible route to Spiti is via Shimla. The Manali to Spiti route, which passes through Kunzum Pass, is closed due to heavy snowfall. The Shimla route is relatively safer and remains open most of the year, though road conditions may be icy.

4. What type of vehicle is required for winter Spiti?

A sturdy vehicle, preferably a 4x4 or SUV, is recommended for traveling in Spiti during winter. The roads can be covered in snow and ice, so a vehicle with good ground clearance and snow chains (if necessary) is ideal. Most winter tours use Tempo Travelers, SUVs, or Jeeps suited for rough terrain.

5. Is acclimatization necessary for Spiti in winter?

Yes, Spiti is located at high altitudes (above 3,000 meters). Acclimatization is important to avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It's recommended to ascend gradually and spend a couple of days at lower altitudes like Reckong Peo or Kalpa before heading to higher places like Kaza.

6. Are all hotels and homestays operational during winter?

Not all accommodations in Spiti are open during winter. Many hotels and guesthouses shut down due to the extreme weather. However, several homestays in Kaza, Kalpa, and other major towns remain open, offering basic facilities and heating. Ensure your accommodation is confirmed and provides sufficient heating arrangements (like room heaters or traditional stoves).

7. What kind of clothing should I pack for a winter Spiti trip?

You will need to pack for extremely cold weather:

  • Thermal wear (top and bottom)
  • Insulated jacket
  • Fleece or woolen layers
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket
  • Gloves, woolen socks, and caps
  • Waterproof boots with good grip
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (snow glare can be intense)

8. Will I have access to electricity and internet in Spiti during winter?

Electricity can be intermittent, and there are frequent power cuts in Spiti during winter due to snow and harsh weather. It’s a good idea to carry power banks for your devices. BSNL is the most reliable mobile network in the region, but internet connectivity is limited and slow.

9. What should I do in case of altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness can affect anyone at high altitudes. To prevent it:

  • Ascend gradually.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.
  • Eat light, nutritious meals.
  • You can carry Diamox (after consulting your doctor) to help with acclimatization.
  • In case of severe symptoms (like headache, dizziness, nausea), descend to a lower altitude immediately and seek medical help.

10. What kind of food can I expect in Spiti during winter?

Food in Spiti is basic but hearty. You can expect simple meals like dal, rice, chapati, and seasonal vegetables. Tibetan dishes such as thukpa (noodle soup) and momos are also popular. In winter, availability of fresh produce may be limited, so expect a simpler menu. Carry snacks like energy bars and chocolates for long journeys.

11. Are there any ATMs available in Spiti?

There are a few ATMs in Reckong Peo and Kaza, but they may not always be operational due to poor connectivity or cash shortages. It’s best to carry enough cash for your entire trip as card payments may not be widely accepted, especially in remote areas.

12. What permits do I need for a Spiti tour?

For Indian nationals, no special permits are required to visit Spiti. However, for foreign nationals, permits are required to visit certain regions close to the border, like Nako and Sumdo. Your tour operator will help arrange these permits if needed.

13. Is it possible to see snow leopards in Spiti during winter?

Winter is the best time for snow leopard spotting in Spiti, as they descend to lower altitudes in search of prey. Wildlife enthusiasts often visit Spiti in winter for snow leopard expeditions. However, these sightings are not guaranteed and require patience, local guides, and sometimes specialized tours.

14. Can I travel solo to Spiti in winter?

While solo travel to Spiti is possible in winter, it is not recommended unless you are highly experienced in extreme weather conditions and self-sufficient. Due to the isolation, harsh weather, and limited facilities, it is safer and more comfortable to travel with a group or through a trusted tour operator.

15. Are there any medical facilities in Spiti?

The major towns like Kaza and Reckong Peo have basic medical facilities and health centers. However, for more serious health concerns, you may need to travel to Shimla or a bigger city. Always carry a first-aid kit, essential medications, and consider taking portable oxygen in case of altitude sickness.
