The Kedarnath is located in Rudraprayag district, at an altitude of 3583 m & situated at shores of river Mandakini with soaring snow-clad mountain peaks and wooded forests at its backdrop. Kedarnath temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is built of massive & evenly grey stones with a large statue of the Nandi Bull situated outside the temple. The motorable road continues till Gaurikund beyond its 16 Kms trek has to be done to reach Kedarnath. Kedarnath holds quite a good history and is said to be one of those crucial places where after the battle of Kurukshetra Mahabharata's Pandavas went to Varanasi journey to get the Lord’s blessing. It is believed that they wanted to clean off their guilt of killing their kin and kith which is why a place is quite popular. However, later Pandavas found the Shiva who then decided to get in form of buffalo so that nobody would be able to recognize but still Pandavas managed to get close to the Lord. That is the main reason Lord decided to go underground forever. It is at that movement when Bhima who is one of the five Pandavas made huge efforts to stop him by holding the kegs and tails of the bull but lord Dived and then turned into evaporation at the place where he left his lump this lump is now called as Kedarnath Temple.

Highlights

There are four temples around Kedarnath itself, namely- Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar which form the Panch Kedar pilgrimage sites. The first hall inside Kedarnath Temple contains statues of the five Pandava brothers, Krishna, Nandi, the vehicle of Shiva and Virabhadra, one of the guards of Shiva.

The favourite part of the experience was the summit and the view of the snow capped mountains. the icing on the cake though was the superbly organised trek ably led by our trek leader and supported very well by his team. There was nothing lacking and we had great food and an amazing motivator with us in the form of our trek leader. Will definitely recommend this trek as it pushes you both physically and mentally and the completion is a spiritual experience in itself.

Frequest Questions

Yes, compared to other high-altitude treks, Tungnath Chandrashila is easy to moderately difficult. In reality, it is the ideal chance for beginners to experience a snow trek in the Himalayas.

At chopta, which is the starting point of the trek. On the trek route and campsite, Jio networks are available but not at every point.

There are a few ways to get to Chopta from Delhi, including by car, bus, and train. Most people take a bus or a car from Delhi to Rishikesh, and then another bus or car to Chopta. The closest train station to Chopta is in Haridwar, which is about 230 km away. You can take a bus or drive from Haridwar to Chopta.

Yes, In winter, Uttarakhand's Chopta hill station gets snow. Winter sports like skiing are popular in Chopta since the temperature drops below freezing in December and January. The area near Chopta gets a lot of snow, making it a popular hiking and trekking site. Before visiting Chopta in winter, verify the weather as snowfall can fluctuate year to year.

Mount Tungnath is the tallest of Uttarakhand's five Panch Kedar temples. The world's highest Shiva temple and third highest Panch Kedar summit. It's 3,680 metres (12,073 ft) high.

Yes, it is possible to do the Tungnath trek in January, but you should keep in mind that the weather will have a big effect on how long it takes. Many tourists do the Chopta trek in January, but you should check the weather. There is a chance there won't be any snow. This will make it easier to finish the trek in less time. Heavy snow could make it hard to finish.
