Day 1 - Gear up! Your monsoon adventure has begun
Start your adventure with an adrenaline packed experience and leave behind the lush plains of Guwahati and head to the magical highlands of Meghalaya. Get ready to get swept away by the romantic monsoons of the region, perhaps they will grant you the customary mist and mystery, transforming every corner on the road into postcard scenery.
Umiam Lake is another beautiful place that is calm and quiet, and it is a huge glassy reservoir protected by gentle hills. Just stop and breathe the fresh air and enjoy wonderful sceneries.
Now we proceed further into the green bosom of the state towards the beautiful hill station of Sohra, or rather Cherrapunjee as it is much better known as, it is one of the wettest places on the planet.
In the evening we will enter our homey place of residence, among green cliffs and smoke-filled paths. Relax, hear the thunder of a waterfall in the distance nearby, and see the peaceful nature of Sohra as the mood of the days ahead.
Day 2 - Embrace the Meghalayan Enchantment: A Day of Exploration and Connection
Wake up to the energizing and fresh air of Meghalaya, and the adventure itself increases and nature itself starts to live. Once you are done with a good breakfast, spend a little time soaking in the serene vibes of the hills that mountains bring: today is a day, and you will find something new around each corner. Remember we are in these highlands and the sun sets early, and so we are going to move round at a tempo peculiarly her own.
Scenic marvel or nature displaying its art history Sohra is nestled in the East Khasi Hills and it is more alive and breathing than you imagine. This place is so amazing with roaring waterfalls and crystalline natural pools, the brilliance of the architecture of living root bridges, and even the enigma of the ancient caves. In addition to the dramatic geography, you will observe the glimpses of the gentleness and strength of local communities of the Khasi people, living in harmony with nature.
What are typical city-dweller paths, full of people, will give way to an unknown trail with our professional local guides, and the sound of nature and living creatures may substitute the sound of horn. It is a day of grit and un-missable encounters be it of standing below a veil of a concealed water boil waterfall or of a crossing of generation aged creation of a root bridge.
Just before the misty hills, we will have to come back to your homestay in Sohra as the golden light goes behind.
Share tales around a crackling bonfire, converse with your fellow travellers and absorb the mysticism of Meghalaya whilst lying under a backdrop of stars.
Day 3 - Explore the unexplored living root bridges
Wake up to a leisurely breakfast and get set to explore more of the soul of Meghalaya into a day where you will find nature, heritage and beats blending into ideal perfection.
We start by going to the village of Mawkyrnot with some of the least popular living root bridges in the area. The lesser-known wonders on the other hand provide a more personal experience with the ancient weaving Khasi art and culture of harvesting tree-roots and turning them into natural walkways. It has been practiced by generations and is one of the most popular tourist attractions around the country. Tour the organic masterpieces with your local guides as they tell you the untold story, symbolism and science behind the art. It is not just a track but an experience in living culture.
With our tires filled with nature, we proceed to Pynter, where the music culture of Meghalaya unfolds itself. Famous as a village that owes most of its success to turning out really great musicians, this village is a place where music is not only considered an art form but is even regarded as a lifestyle. In this case, you will be served with an intimate show with traditional instruments and native sounds. This is pure, rare, and resounding; it gives you a sponge-seat to the tunes that constitute the cultural horizon of the Khasi hills.
With the twilight upon us we drive to Pongtung, a picturesque village, lying in low hills and thick pine-woods. Get in your comfy lodging, and as the day sounds in your ears.
Day 4 - Off the beaten trail
Eat a hearty breakfast, put on your hiking gear and pack your swim clothes because today is going to be an adventure of a lifetime diving through the regal beauty of Meghalaya.
Given a local guide on board, we are taken very far into pristine Pynursla countryside, far beyond tourist routes. The hikes are not too difficult, and the longest one does not last more than 40 minutes, so these hikes are ideal for trekkers who want to have a closer look at the place, but they do not have to overdo it. You will be ready to discover some hidden waterfalls and natural water pools when you are walking through the lush forest, mossy paths, and rocky creeks. These peaceful places are not only chilled out but also a time to find yourself relating with natural beauty at its roots in Meghalaya.
On the last day we travel to the busy hill city of Shillong again exploring the beauty of nature. Coming in the evening, you will even have an opportunity to wander around local markets, buy handcrafted artifacts or traditional clothes, and enjoy the taste of Khasi food in cafes and street-side shops. As the sun goes down, have the relaxed city setting of Shillong seduce you.
Day 5 - An adrenaline packed natural playground, Mawlyngbna
Start your day with a fresh breakfast, grab your gears, and be prepared to have both excitement and relaxation in a day. We drive into Mawsynram, which is one of the wettest sites on earth and is located deep in the East Khasi Hills. Be ready to have a 3-hour river canyoning experience, which is the adrenaline-charged adventure that will bring you through the churning rapids and labyrinthic rock formations, splashing waterfalls, and crystal-clear streams under the supervision of our experienced local guides. It does not matter whether you are jumping into natural pools or traversing through the narrow gorges, this obstacle course is part of the best that nature has to offer.
After the adventure we reduce speed and have a nice local lunch in the nearby village. Savour the traditional Khasi food, which has been prepared with age-old recipes and is served with much warmth reminding you of the spirit at the highlands.
After lunch the tour resumes in the afternoon with two secrets of the region. To see the Split Rock, a truly breathtaking piece of geologic history which shows how the eons-old processes shaped the landscape in Meghalaya. Then go to the Umkakhoi Lake, a serene reservoir surrounded by forests and twilight brown skies. Kayak your way through Kinabatangan in a panoramic kayak ride that is full of golden reflections and chirpy birds that relax your mood to bliss. When the sun goes down, explore the exciting adventure in finding fossils, where rocks tell tales of the pre-historic world.
Head back to your peaceful homestay when the dusk is falling. Night is the time to relax and socialize via a crackling bonfire, local beers, or even storytelling games that connect you to other travelers. Let music dance and memories form under the starlight Khasi skies.
Day 6 - Bid Farewell
It is a full breakfast time before we wave out goodbye to the misty hills and falling waterfalls of Meghalaya. Feeling packed up and full of heart, we turn and set off again on our way back (an idyllic 3.5-hour drive) to the bustling plains of Assam.
When we are back on the highlands, look back one more time to see the curves of the roads, the green trees and the inaccessible valleys that made this quite memorable. As you either get on with more travels or book the flight home, there is no doubt that you are going home with the memories of your lifetime (and some envious photos, as well).
The root bridges to the river canyons and fireside chats to kayaking during sunset, it was one more adventure and I am looking forward to having you along in this journey. We do hope that it is not the end. There is so much more to see in the Northeast and we have a great time seeing you here again on another offbeat adventure.

What’s life without adventure? Isn’t the real purpose of life to travel, to experience new places, and witness the sunrise from new mountaintops? This thought is what united Jatin and Tarun over a cup of chai, in spite of being from two unrelated backgrounds (CA and IT). They knew each other since the time Jatin was helping Tarun learn the ways of the wilderness through weekend treks and outings with another traveling group. Their love for traveling and trekking together motivated them to start something of their own. Thus was born “Plan The Unplanned”, where travel goals come true. Under the Companies Act, Plan The Unplanned is incorporated as Unplanned Journeys Private Limited They started their journey on unsteady ground, much like any other company, but they shared an infatuation for travel and adventure with their customers, which amplified their determination, and thus, Plan the Unplanned family keeps getting bigger every day! Just about any travel idea can come alive with Plan The Unplanned…treks, adventure activities like rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, backpacking trips across the country, cultural outings, photo walks; everything that fellow travelers need, to explore the great outdoors together.
