The name “Meghalaya” translates to “abode of the clouds.” It occupies a mountainous plateau with summits ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 feet. The Garo Hills, Khasi Hills, and Jaintia Hills form a single massif of tablelands separated by eastward-trending ridges. Deep valleys, narrow streams, and steep-sided valleys characterize the landscape. The Umiam-Barapani river is a major source of hydroelectric power for Assam and Meghalaya.

Meghalaya is known for its matrilineal society, where lineage and inheritance pass through the mother’s side. The Khasi and Garo tribes are prominent, and their languages are widely spoken. The state boasts crystal-clear rivers like the Dawki River. The famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge near Cherrapunji is a marvel made by training rubber tree roots to form a sturdy bridge. Numerous natural caves add to the enchantment of Meghalaya. The climate is generally mild, making it a pleasant destination for travelers.

Kaziranga, this mystical land, is where the majestic Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros roams freely, resembling a creature from ancient legends. Endowed with a single horn on their nose, these magnificent beings are often hailed as the unicorns of the real world, adding to the park's aura of enchantment.
