Hello travelers!

Nestled among the mountains of the western ghats, Wayanad is one of the loveliest hill stations of southern India. There are many good things about Wayanad like full of greenery, misty mountains, wildlife sanctuaries, lakes, dams, waterfalls, tea estates, coffee estates, historical caves, panoramic views, and top of it all – pleasant climate most of the year. With its rich flora and fauna, Wayanad is part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. Wayanad is actually a large district that has varying altitudes between 700 meters and 2100 meters above sea level, which will appear in its climate as you pass by.

Well, if Wayanad is so big, then where all are we heading to?

To start with, we will head to Soochipara waterfalls or Kanthampara waterfalls (there is a limit of 1200 tourists per day to the waterfalls).  The 900 Kandi of Wayanad is next in our list. It has lush green tea estates accompanied by grand views of rolling hills, making it best place for a Glass Bridge. There are some jeeps ferrying people up and down to the Glass Bridge. We will end the first day with a visit to Wayanad’s well known place amidst Tea estates – Ziplining & Sky cycle (optional) or Karapuzha Dam that offers many adventure activities. It’s always a serene experience spending time in front of such a huge water body, especially waiting for the sunset.

The next day, we will explore Edakkal caves that are home to one of the oldest human settlements with their rock engravings of the pre-historic era as proof. A pleasant view from the top of the caves will compensate for any loss of energy. Banasura Sagar Dam are the tourist attractions we will tick off. Banasura is believed to be the largest earthen dam in the country. For those who are interested, the dam has a Boating option too.

Overall, Wayanad has many out-of-ordinary places, which we will explore on this backpacking trip.

It’s time to travel Wayanad. It’s time to savor this wonderful hill station.

Breakfast, Dinner

  • Cross Karnataka-Kerala border and head towards mountains of Wayanad.
  • Freshen up and fuel up with authentic Kerala Breakfast.
  • Take a journey towards Soochipara waterfalls or Kanthampara waterfalls that has a pool at the base of the falls. Take a well deserved dip in the falls, if allowed by forest authorities at that time based on the flow of water and climate conditions.
  • Note: There is a Forest Department limit of 1200 tourists to visit waterfalls per day. Everyone must stand in queue and take tickets. That’s why we are going here first.
  • Head towards a beautiful location named 900 Kandi which is in deep forest. 4×4 jeeps ferry tourists up and down over here. This Jeep charges are included in the package. Interested folks may visit the famous Wayanad glass bridge that protrudes into the valley overlooking thick jungle and rolling hills.
  • Finish quick Lunch at a local restaurant on the way.
  • (Optional) Visit Wayanad’s Longest Zipline & Skycycle adventure zone. Interested travelers may indulge in these adventure activities if they are open based on weather conditions.
  • Note 1: There is a limit to number of tickets for Zipline/Skycycle, and no pre-booking. If it’s crowded, it gets difficult to get slot. We cannot help it as they don’t give preference to anyone.
  • Note 2: On rainy days, the local authorities might stop these adventure activities and we cannot help it again. Because of above 2 reasons, we made this as an optional activity.
  • The Zipline area is a good place to go on a nature walk around Tea Estates.
  • Give an evening visit to Karapuzha Dam that offers different adventure activities.
  • Head to the camp by late evening, refresh with evening tea and some snacks.
  • Bonfire between 8 to 10 PM. After this, we are not allowed to play loud music. We have to respect forest area in Wayanad and enjoy our time by sharing stories and playing games.
  • Hot veggie Dinner served in the cold climate.
  • Rest for the night in your assigned tents.

Breakfast

  • Wake up to the misty morning weather and fresh breeze.

Seasional Variations

  • Sept to Feb (winter): Intermittent rains greet us in Sept and Oct, but the hill station would be fresh and pretty after monsoons. Dry and pleasant climate starts from Nov till Feb. Nights will be cold in all the months. Plenty of water in streams and waterfalls. Best time for camping and to take dips. The sky is ripe for amazing sunrises and sunsets.
  • June to Aug (monsoon months): This is the wettest season. Wayanad gets plenty of rain during monsoons, and is also prone to landslides. We don’t usually organize Wayanad in these months.
  • Mar to May (summer): Gets hot. We don’t usually organize Wayanad in these months.
