The Place – Western Ghats start from Southern tip of Gujarat and end down south in Kerala. A major portion of the Northern region of the Western ghats is situated in Maharashtra in Satara district. The Western Ghats are one of the world’s few Bio-Diversity Hotspots and houses a very intricate ecosystem. Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Chandoli National Park (together called as Sahyadri Tiger reserve) are an important portion of the protected areas in western Maharashtra. They are known for their characteristic landscape composed of hills and hillocks with rivulets and streams emerging from them and the typical plateaus at the top. They are also home to a wide range of endemic flora. Animals like Indian Gaur, Sambar, Barking deer, Indian Giant Squirrel are commonly seen here along with occasional sightings of the elusive nocturnal species like the Asian Palm civet, Jungle cat, Leopard cat and also the Indian leopard. It is a birders’ paradise with a great number of local as well some migratory birds calling it their home. Highlights – - It is the only Tiger reserve in Western Maharashtra. - A very exclusive itinerary covering a variety of local habitats. - One of the very few places where one gets to experience the jungle through walking trails in addition to vehicle safaris. - An interesting night trail to observe some elusive nocturnal species and understanding the nocturnal patterns in the jungle. - Koyna is home to the native Dhangars, who are herders by profession, with an innate sense of reading the jungle. - A visit to Hydroelectric power project park.
