LOVE & LAVANI
एक अनोखी प्रेमकहानी
थोडी पागल थोडी सयानी

The Western Routes is organising shows of the famous Lavani play called Love & Lavani on Sunday, 19 November in Pune. This play follows the real-life love story of Lavani queen Shabanabai Ashturkar who belongs to a matriarchal dancing community. The play celebrates love in many of its avatars and is done in a performative storytelling style. The story is interspersed with live Lavani performances that encapsulate several key moments from the narrative.

What is Lavani?

Lavani, the traditional song and dance of Maharashtra is hugely popular for its direct involvement of the audience during the performance and also its unabashed expression of sexuality. Mainstream media has always portrayed Lavani women at two extremes – either as victims or as villains. Their real-life stories, their matriarchal tradition, and their joys and sorrows, however, are not widely known. Through the play centered around Lavani we bring to you a never-seen-before range of performances by traditional Sangeet Bari Lavani artists. At the same time we hope to create a platform for the Lavani women to tell us their stories.

Lavani is a liberating experience to those witnessing it live. It speaks a unifying language of love and desire that resonates with people across all ages, genders, languages and cultures.
