Sacred Forest Caves Resort at Tyrna
Mornings in Meghalaya are the most beautiful. The sun rises early in North East India and gives us a wonderful opportunity to spend our morning either by relaxing by the river side, going for a nice walks around the village or spending some time doing yoga.
A delicious breakfast is served after which we pack our bags and start for an exciting day ahead. Our first and most awaited stop for today is the Sacred Forest of Meghalaya. As we enter in the forest, our local guide (who by the way is from the Royal Family) will tell us many interesting stories highlighting the significance of the forest, traditions followed, and the rare plants found there and their uses. He also is a great photographer and knows the rights spots to take the most uneblievable pictures in the forest. :D. We would get a great insight into the beliefs and traditions of the Khasis people of Meghalaya. Be prepared to be blown away by many interesting tales.
After our guided tour of the forest, we start our journey towards the village famous for its living root bridges, Tyrna. Appx 60 Kms from Mawphlang, the route to Tyrna passed through beautiful ghats and villages. But be prepared! The last part of the journey is bumpy and adventurous
En route, we will stop by and explore The Garden Of Caves. It's a natural space, created by seasonal waterfalls and fed by rains. Surrounded by the emerald greens of bushes and hedges, the Garden of Caves are home to many mesmerizing caves, waterfalls and cascades.
Our stay for tonight is in a beautiful resort perched at the edge of the mountain, offering a panoramic view of the nearby mountain ranges and waterfalls
Trek to Double Decker Living Root Bridge & Rainbow falls
Living Root Bridges Rainbow Falls View point at Resort
Gear up for an exciting trekking day.
We dedicate this day to learn about the fascinating living root bridge of Meghalaya. The Umshiang double decker living Root Bridge is the mecca of all the living root bridges in Meghalaya. Getting there is no simple task. One has to descend 3500 cemented steps to Nongriat village that houses the Double decker living Root Bridge. After a descend of 1000 steps and trekking slightly off-route is a single decker living Root Bridge named Ritymmen, which hangs over a rain-fed river. Being 50 metres long, Ritymmen is also the longest known living root bridge. The bridge shakes and swings as one walks over it making the experience more adventurous.
Further hike towards the double decker bridge passes through several small villages, where people are always smiling and welcoming. There are also a couple of beautiful footbridges on the way. The double decker, hanging over the river, are created from the huge rubber trees sitting on either side. The roots are intertangled in a complex manner making the bridges more sturdy and strong. It’s truly a wonder in itself. The trail ahead of the Double decker living Root Bridge takes you to the natural pools and the famous Rainbow falls. (We definitely will be going there ;) )
Tyrna - Cherrapunji
After Breakfast and spending the morning at our beautiful resort, we head towards Cherrapunji, exploring various waterfalls and caves on the way.
Although the distance from Tyrna to main Cherrapunji town is just 20kms, you pass through view points and beautiful roads. We will stop at the Seven
Sister falls view point and explore Mowsmai caves before checking in our beautiful stay for the day.
We spend the evening at one of the most beautiful falls in Cherrapunji , Nohkalikai. It falls from a height of 335 meters (1120 feet) as is regarded as the fifth highest waterfall of the world. It is the tallest plunge waterfall of India. The name ‘Noh-Ka-Likai’ refers to the ‘Jump of Ka Likai’. As per the legendary story, a lady named Likai jumped off the cliff, just like the Nohkalikai fall does, when she came to know that her husband killed her only child.
Setting aside the tragic story, Nokalikai is like no other waterfall and we can trek to the top and the bottom of the falls.
Cherrapunji - Shongpdeng
Waterfalls Drive Dawki River Water Activities
After Breakfast we head to yet another beautiful waterfall, also known as 3 steps falls or Wei Sowdong falls. A short 20 min hikes down the falls will take you to the different steps of the falls and the beautiful view points.
After seeping in the beauty of falls, we will explore yet another cave, the Arwah Caves. Known for its limestone formations and fossils, it is surrounded by the thick forest of Law Shynna. Arwah Cave is an absolute treat for adventurers and archaeology junkies. The cave itself is significantly larger than Mawsmai but only a small part of the cave has been opened for tourists. It is about 300 meters which takes around 20 minutes to explore.
After Lunch we start on our beautiful drive Cherrapunji from to Shongpdeng later during the day covering a distance 90kms. We can spend the evening, enjoying the sunset from the bridge over one of the most clearest river waters in India.
