Nestled between the Bhandara and Gondia districts of eastern Maharashtra in the heart of India is the relatively unexplored Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary. The lush greenery of this mixed tropical deciduous forest is rich in fauna, providing sanctum to a number of deer species, leopards, nilgai, sloth bears, Indian gaurs, wild dogs and – of course – the Bengal tiger. A wide variety of avifauna, including migratory waterbirds, also call Nagzira home.
Dominated by mixed forests, bamboo, teak and patches of grassland, the landscape blends the cover of tall grasses with sparse forests to allow top predators like the tigers, leopards and wild dogs to co-exist amidst an abundance of antelopes.
To give you a more hands-on, rustic experience, we will spend quality time with the locals living in villages close to the sanctuary, getting to know the nitty-gritties of their lives. Through our interactions with them, we will make new friends and gain valuable insight into their lives as we sit under a starlit sky, enthralled by their stories. We will also interact with the forest personnel who work through the year to preserve this unique ecosystem.
We board the Nagpur-bound Pune-Nagpur Express from Pune. Alternatively, you can also travel by overnight AC luxury sleeper bus or fly down to Nagpur the next day (11th May 2018) by an early morning flight. The most suitable flight from Pune is Go Air G8-283.
At 9:30 AM, we reach Nagpur and head towards Nagzira after a sumptuous breakfast. Campers who are travelling by bus or by flight will be picked up from their arriving point and all the campers will unite at the breakfast point.
Reach Nagzira by afternoon, freshen up and have lunch. In the afternoon, we leave for our first safari in the jungle. Over-night stay inside the core zone!

Kanha. The lengthening evening shadows. A cup of warm chai and never-ending conversations. This is how Footloose Journeys began.
Bablu, our driver in Kanha, was talking with unprecedented fervor. The jungle, traversed all day in the open-top safari, was coming alive once again. Bablu’s words were painting a picture unseen to the tourists. It was not that he had been reticent before. No one had bothered to ask.
The guides and drivers that unravel the mysteries of the forests often remain nameless. Hidden behind the veil of professional tourism, the real contributors to the forest perform a thankless job. It was the desire to repay their unspoken debt that got us started on Footloose. We are passionate travellers who believe that there is more to travelling than just “visiting” a place! We believe that travelling is more than just a bunch of tick-marks on the list of places you wish to visit. We believe that a traveller should try and understand the place rather than just be there. And with this credence, we aim at adding social values to tourism – for the benefit of both the visitors and the hosts!
Co-founder and instructor at Footloose Journey, Paresh is a Naturalist! He believes that travelling or experiencing new places is not complete unless and until the local communities are understood, even lived. He strives to introduce everyone around him to the way of living of the inhabitants of the places. With his dare-devil attitude and jocularity, he is the life of the team! Having him around on expeditions is a time spent in mirth and wonder. Wildlife Photographer | Developing community oriented tourism models at various destinations in India. | People & conservation.
